| Craftwork |
Craftwork reflects the customs and way of life of a people, and represents a valuable cultural treasure.
Two disciplines stand out in the craftwork of the Lea-Artibai region: the manufacture of Xisteras (baskets for pelota games) and handcrafted Kutxas (large chests) and furniture.

Xistera manufacturing
Traditionally, Xistera manufacturing has centred in the towns of Markina-Xemein and Etxebarria, where the pelota game is much more than a mere sport. The xistera, a tool but also a beautiful decorative object, is made of chestnut wood, wickerwork and leather. The craftwork produced in these towns is sent to practically all of the world's pelota courts.

Traditional Basque furniture
The workshop of José María Arriaga, one of the greatest masters of traditional Basque furniture, is to be found in Markina-Xemein. This superb wood carver combines the production of traditional Basque furniture with new forms of artistic expression provided by his two disciples and new masters in the workshop: his own sons.

Model boats
Craftwork in the coastal towns of Ondarroa and Lekeitio is influenced by their fishing activity. Here, the model boats that are real jewels for collectors are also highly decorative objects.
