STREET THEATRE AND CINEMA Year after year, Lekeitio's streets are the scenario for two interesting events. One is the International Street Theatre Context, a festival in which groups from several European countries take part. One of the festival's main features is the lack of barriers and the fact that the public takes part in the show.

Basque Wedding The second event is a representation of a Basque Wedding, a show full of local colour. The main characters, the bride and groom and the guests, are dressed in the traditional manner of the beginning of the last century. The show recreates the ancient Basque marriage ritual: handing over the dowry, the marriage ceremony and subsequent procession followed by festivities.

Short Film and Video On a different level, the Short Film and Video in Euskera Contest is also held in Lekeitio each year. It is the only contest of its kind in the Basque Country. When the contest began in 1977 it was non-competitive and only showed super-8 short films. In 1981 it became a contest. The number of participants increased, as well as the quality of the films. In 1983, videos became part of the contest.
During the contest, parallel exhibitions, conferences and samples of films from other countries are shown.
